About the Inventor
Abba C. Zubair, M.D., Ph.D., is medical director of Transfusion Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy at Mayo Clinic in Florida. His division includes a blood bank supporting one of the largest liver transplant programs in the world, a state-of-the-art Clinical Apheresis Unit, and a FDA registered cGMP Stem Cell Therapy Laboratory. He is a professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, serves as associate dean for Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, and is a certified international inspector of bone marrow transplant centers and blood banks for the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).
Dr. Zubair is passionate about taking ideas from the bench to the bedside. He is the co-principal investigator and the sponsor of four clinical trials on the safety and feasibility of using mesenchymal stem cells to treat patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, lung rejection, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and interstitial lung fibrosis.
As a recipient of an award from NASA (CASIS), Dr. Zubair is using the microgravity environment to assess the feasibility of growing stem cells to be used in the treatment of patients with stroke and downstream applications in broad tissue engineering/regenerative medicine.
